About Dr. Stephen Beller

Stephen E. Beller, PhD is a clinical psychologist, a software architect and developer, and CEO of NHDS.

Dr. Beller began using a personal computer when they first became available in the early 1980s, and immediately recognized its potential to help increase the efficiency and effectiveness of psychotherapy by building and sharing knowledge from client (patient) generated data.

In order to realize his vision, he learned to write code, and began developing a behavioral health information system for his practice, using it to assist in the planning and delivery of care.

In 1994, Dr. Beller founded NHDS and built the company's team to expand software development and commercialize its products.

Four years later he received a U.S. patent on the technology framework NHDS was using to build its healthcare apps. This software technology was named the Health Information Index (Hii) system. By the late 90s the company had developed a suite of apps that supported of Dr. Beller's vision.

From the late 90s to early 2000, Dr. Beller led the NHDS team into the field of knowledge management. At that time, they built software systems for the company's largest customers, one of which is Fortune 500 company.

In 2005, Dr. Beller re-focused his company on healthcare and began writing his Curing Healthcare blog. He wrote over 200 posts covering a wide variety of topics about healthcare delivery and value, psychology, psychotherapy, the mind-body connection, information technology, innovation, insurance, research, standards, and more. A list of relevant articles posted and links from 2006 to the present, with descriptions and links, can be accessed here.

In 2008, NHDS's Hii system was acknowledged in the press as a creative technology built "...from the bottom-up, rather than the top-down...[Whereas] top-down solutions usually get built-out first, because there's motivation to build them...bottom-up solutions challenge them later."

Over the past 10 years, in addition to developing new software products and prototypes, Dr. Beller has been:

  • Creating an evolving “biopsychosocial ontology” (set of mind-body health concepts and categories) for building “whole person” knowledge that uses health information technology to support high value measurement-based care
  • Publishing papers and making presentations about Hii and Whole Person Integrated Care (WPIC)
  • Participating in 5 voluntary Federal workgroups tasked to define health information technical standards
  • Participating in the American Medical Association’s discussion forum as a thought leader in behavioral HIT and whole-person care; built a physicians Advisory Board
  • Described how to use a novel software system to enable and support the Behavioral Health—Primary Care Integration healthcare delivery model
  • Writing in LinkedIn and Medium on a wide variety of topics.

In the past few years, the company's focus has been on modernizing and extending the mental/behavioral health components of the Hii system to create the RevealMyWay™ Wellbeing Enhancement software toolset. In addition, the RevealMyWay™ Wellbeing Project has been established to expand a growing network of collaborators.

Dr. Beller also studies and writes about the fundamentals of human nature, mind-sets, experience, sense of self, social determinants of health, coping and problem-solving, childhood trauma, cognitive biases, and the integration of different psychotherapeutic approaches.
